Lip enhancements are one of the most popular procedures that we carry out at the White Horse Aesthetic Clinic, and we’ve blogged before about the best procedures to achieve full, natural-looking lips.
But what exactly is the big deal about full lips? When we’re making decisions about cosmetic procedures, why do lips get so much attention? After all, there are many other effective procedures such as botox, skin peels and non-surgical facelifts.
An intriguing bit of research can give us some clues. Researchers at the University of Manchester studied what men pay attention to when they first look at a woman’s face. They presented 50 men with images of different women, and tracked their participants’ eye movements for the first ten seconds.
For women wearing lipstick, the men spent around 7 seconds staring at her lips – compared to 0.95 seconds looking at her eyes and 0.85 seconds studying her hair. That means that they spent over eight times as long staring at the women’s lips then her hair!
Lipstick had a huge effect, trebling the time the men spent focusing on lips. The research also showed that they perceived full lips to be more attractive. In fact, the women judged by the participants to have the most attractive pouts were two women notable for their full-lipped look: Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johannson.
‘This study proves that lips represent one of the most sensual aspects of a woman’s body and play a critical role in human sexual attraction.
He also concluded that full, red lips are the perfect combination for attractiveness.
So why is it that full lips are so highly prized? According to some researchers, it’s possible that it’s part of our evolutionary heritage. Higher levels of oestorgen increase lip thickness, and so full lips may act as a visual indication of abundant oestrogen. As oestrogen is one of the key hormones necessary for fertility, some scientists speculate that full lips are like an advertisement that a woman is fertile. Men may be programmed to instinctively respond to this.
Alternatively, perhaps it’s all down to historical accident. After all, enhancing lips has been wth us since the days of the Ancient Egyptians, so it wouldn’t be surprising if our lip-fetish is just another part of our cultural heritage
Either way, there seems little doubt that the pout is here to stay. For those of us not blessed with Scarlett or Angelina’s mouths (or who have started to lose lip thickness with age), it’s fortunate that non-cosmetic procedures are now available to make the most of what we have.
